Crickets Warped In Time (13:31) |
| availability | This CD is limited to 25 copies and is now sold out! |
| description | ADAMATIC consists of two collaborative sessions recorded in 2002 that show Adam Kriney's earliest forrays into experimental noise/electronics/looping and abstract musical soundscapes. The first 4 tracks were recorded with Eitan Hoenig and Nick Vargo both playing percussion and household objects, while Kriney manned the helm of his mixing board and electronics setup, sampled, looped, and otherwise fucked with the sounds generated by the two. The results show a real-time document of the sounds of household objects meshed with obvious percussion in both a natural unadultered state and an effected, distorted, feedback laden wash of noise state. The latter
3 tracks were recorded with Yvonne Battad who played synthesizer and organ,
while Kriney, also playing keys, constructed and deconstructed the sounds
in real-time through his electronics setup, creating a fuzzed out, blissful,
multi-layered galaxy of psychadelic bubbling tones. |

| description | This double CD documents the first two duo recordings of Adam Kriney in free jazz/improvisation based scenarios. VOL. 2 consists of 5 tracks recorded with saxophone player John Keegan. Adam and John had created a very distinct improvised music relationship over the first few months of 2003, and these tracks recorded in late April 2003 are the first and only they ever recorded in duo format. Within the same week, Adam got together for the first time with double bassist Brad Schrimer and recorded the three tracks on VOL. 1. |

world of LA OTRACINA, recalling everything from late 60's free jazz mayhem,
heavy stoner sludge, and trance enducing drone-scapes. Recorded live 5/24/4
in Brooklyn, NY, this was LA OTRACINA's first performance as a trio, and
the first performance with new synth/rhodes player Nick Chapman aboard,

Forestrial Communication (25:20) Listen to an edited section here |
| availability | This
CD is sold out! |
| description | This 1-track 25+ minute CD documents improvised sounds in homage to and in search of.....the forests and the animals within them...the jungles and the tribes that inhabit them... the rhythms and chaos that nature exudes both in reality and in fantasized cartoon imagery...pixies dance, bears hunt for honey, storms rustle the foliage, flutes and drums signal to and fro, and echoes of the past swell with massive drones. This CD features Adam Kriney - drums/flutes/percussion;, Anthony Lebron - vocals/electronics/flutes; and Dan Bates electric bass/percussion/flutes. Anthony Lebron also played in BLIZZARDS and TWI THE HUMBLE FEATHER, and Dan is a past member of LA OTRACINA and TITAN. This CD comes in gorgeous full color packaging, within a translucent envelope, accompanied by artwork by Kriney that exudes the forestrial and tribal tones of the music. |

Electric Worm Frenzy (11:20) |
| availability | This CD is limited to 30 copies and is sold out! |
| description | This
3-track 24+ minute CD is an interesting release by LA OTRACINA. Past releases
have seen the group enveloped in massive Kraurock/noise sound collage
as well as smokin' free-improvisation and stoner psych, but "Spatial"
is in an entirely different realm indeed. The three compositions on "Spatial"
are beautifully woven around the expert synthesizer playing and manipulations
of Nick Chapman, whether working within the context of drone and beat
frequencies, the random beauty of the arpeggiator, or slow sweeping swells
of sonic fudge, along with drummer Adam Kriney and bassist Dan Bates,
the trio occupy a space that is at once realizeable and present and yet
similarly otherworldy and confusing, massive sound quickly recedes to
silence, rhythms are scarce and un-founded, and all the while the beauty
of shattered rainbows and magic comets force outward, upward, inward,
in a geometric maze of constantly shifting spatial energy. This CD is
packaged in beautiful full color materials that shadow its lush psychedelic
sounds. |

a) In Its Green Splendor [0'00 - 15'48] (listen
to an edit) |
| availability | This CD is limited to 100 copies and is sold out. |
| description | This 2-track 26+ minute CD is the first by OWL SOUNDS! It's an early kaleidoscope of jazz-based free-improvised sounds, created by Adam Kriney on drums, Gene Janas on upright bass, Randy Borra on alto sax, and Jay Dunbar also on upright bass, recorded live at the legendary underground punk venue, ABC No Rio, in New York City, on 12/5/4. The twin uprights of Dunbar and Janas (each panned to their own aural channel) establish the extremely psychedelic tones of this recording, with low end eruptions and each bass sawing, plucking, and bowing infinite yet relative patterns of bliss, Kriney's propulsive polyrhythmic and time-distorting drumming colours and drives the momentum of stellar energies, and Borra's alto sax tunefully melodicizes and solidifies the triple swirling rhythmic forces beneath him; and evermore the quartet manage to sail waves of improvised sound into impossibly cohesive passages. Time folds and unwinds, and the louder the saw-whet screams, to out-sing the great waterfall, the closer he comes to his own humility...and the OWL SOUNDS voices stay rooted in the traditions of yore and the desire to bring those emotions to outer dimensions...can I get a fucking 'AMEN'!? |

| release date | May 15, 2005 |
| tracks | 1.
The Haunting Boy Of Buck Run Pond (5:01) |
| availability | This CD is limited to 100 copies and is sold out! |
| description | This 6 track 54+ minute album from THE BEETS is a plea for all of us and even YOU to "Say Yes"! Say yes to the "No's" to the "I Don't Knows" to the "Maybe's" and to the lust of life. On a musical level, THE BEETS reside in a world that crosses the lines of noise, European free-improvsation, and abstract yet lush electronics. Think of the edgy noise-improv of AMM fused with lush synths ala TANGERINE DREAM, random cassette samples clashing with chimes and a bass feeding back, and even one track of nothing but distorted cymbals...yup that's just a hint of the madness and confusion within, and its a fucking mind-scramble of beautiful proportions. THE BEETS is John Dalessi on keyboard, 4-track w/ cassettes, electronics, and cymbal and Adam Kriney on drums, percussion, electric bass, and electronics. You may also know John from Brooklyn group DIRTY CHURCHES. |

| description | This 4-track 21+ minute disc is a nice slice of early improvisations from the "Tonal Ellipse Of The One"-era line-up of LA OTRACINA (Adam Kriney/Tyler Nolan). "Aren't It Spectral" is the first disc to feature guitarist Tyler Nolan along side founder/drummer Adam Kriney. The disc comprises two short solo guitar pieces that shred the fabrics of time and space and twist and morph your universe until all that is left is acceptance and bliss, an 11+ minute free-improvisation that is as dynamic and incomprehensible as the birth of a galaxy with ferocious and heavy-as-fuck chaos-acid-freakouts and delicate pastoral interludes, and an orgasmic 6+ minute mushroom-folk-psych tune that includes layes upon layers of drums, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, Norske chord organ, and vibraphone, sure to bring you to the love-in of your mind. | description | This 1-track hour long recording is a new moment. A momentum, a tom-tom, a lusting fever for exploration through no-now-worlds of miniature happenings, toy sounds, sax-jazz-skronk, free-rock, stop-start stutter-go-fall-over-musik!, blast-beat rhythms, prepared-guitar, extended techniques, and freak-out vocal mayhem. The executers of aural stuffs are Ed Chang on alto-saxophone and electric guitar, Adam Kriney on drums and percussion, and Motoko Shimizu on vocals, toys, percussion, and electric guitar. The trio then changed their name to LUST IONICS. |

| description | A near mythical release, well sort of. What exactly happens indeed, when the cow, upon whose waste thy magic mushroom doth grow, consumes that very entity of fungal delight? Oh the beautiful things he sees and hears and feels and he delights in his world as never before! It is with similar luscious frenzy that we present to you a new recording of such a whirlwind and cosmically manic nature, that only the aforementioned cow will know just what to do/say feel/think be/know! The twisted and ever-playful OWL SOUNDS percussive/rhythmic core of Adam Kriney (traps) and Gene Janas (acoustic bass) frolic in the field of improvised sonics with beloved and bewildering bass clarinetist Arrington de Dionyso of OLD TIME RELIJUN. And when the frolicing is through, a trail of African poly-rhythmics and freak-out anti-rhythmics, bathed in arco-invocations and low-end mutherfucking boom-boom, all raked over reeds of wicked wailing and banshee battlecries dis-/appears before your ears, goddamn, what a trip!? Now this is not to intimate the recording is with out it's calmer pastures, our boys know when to wiggle into sinewy explorations, but BAM! its astral occupation all over again, so don't get too comfy, ya dig? Packaged in gorgeous and surreal hand made art. The first pressing of this cd-r sold out, but after this record was selected as one of Wire Magazine's top Jazz & Improv releases of 2005, Colour Sounds decided to re-release it in a limited edition of 85 more copies, and this version also includes 3 insane sound-collage cut-up remixes, one by TWIN:72 (aka Tom Bell) and two by the duo of LIEK-TWI (Hektor Fontanez and Anthony Lebron), which all further take you down an unraveling road of confused beauty! |

You Don't Fucking Count (:52) |
| availability | This CD is limited to 49 copies and is sold out! |
| description | "Live Singles In Providence" or "Bloody-Fucking-Gore-Improv-No-Wave-Skronk-Meltdown"...well it's just easier to remember the first one, though the second might give you more of a clue of the annihilation you are about to recieve upon listening to the offerning from NYC's sadistic and aurally destructive LUST IONICS. Consisting of Motoko Shimizu on screeched-operatic vocals of the darkest-angelic harmonics and her alien noise makers, her husband Ed Chang on homemade reed instruments, demonized alto sax, toolbox extras, and the sickest evil-noise-jazz guitar since Mr. Sharrock himself, and the ever assaulting batterer of skins and metal Adam Kriney to propel the whole fucking mess into your DOME! This 3" CD consists of 9 short-and-to-the gouging-needle's-point utterly manic and roaring improvised selections, delicately sliced from a live recording of their first show which took place in the ever swirling kingdom of killing sound, Providence, RI. Imagine a Japanese Patty Waters shrieking wordless over sick free-jazzers who are drunk on MARS and stoned on DISCORDANCE AXIS, um, yeah, shit-shut-up! Comes in typically beautiful Colour Sounds packaging, including hand painted and individually sewn inner-sleeves with killer translucent green covers. Limited to 49 copies and co-released with Quodlibet Recordings. |

| description | Amazing and blazing 40 minute tour CD from NYC freak-jazz unit OWL SOUNDS. You feel the colors green and yellow, you maybe even hear/here, a taste of blood, the smell of rhythms found in a bottle floating off South America, overboarded from a 1960’s cruise ship, feathers plucked from some alien peacock, I have seen and I have not seen, but fuck if I can explain it all. 8 cuts of roaring and mesmerizing free improvisation covering everything from 60’s era blow-outs, timeless drones, a Marion Brown piece, bastardized afro-cuban percussives, break-neck changes, swirls, and sways; definitely one of the best offerings from these kids, totally unseen, yet undeniable and masterfully crafted. Totally sick sounding, recorded with bare minimum equipment, straight to VHS tape, no shit! Comes in typically gorgeous Colour Sounds packaging, hand made, sewn sleeves, art/paint all over everything, and limited to only 35 copies for the tour edition first press. |

| description | "Moving/Pictures" marks the first vinyl release on Colour Sounds Recordings, and drummer Adam Kriney declares "This is the most insane record I've ever recorded", nuff said? A black sheet of improvised sonic skull-fuckery from the depths of the most mind-splitting free-noise/brutal-jazz movement, brought to you by the ad-hoc first/only recording of RUST IONICS, the trio of freak drummer Adam Kriney (OWL XOUNDS/LA OTRACINA/BLIZZARDS/CASTANETS), electric guitar wizard Doug Theriault (OFFICE PRODUCTS/DUAL, collab-er with Wally Shoup/Jeph Jerman/Brian Eubanks), and extreme sax-ist Ed Chang (DUAL/SPIN-17/AGENTS At MIDNIGHT, collab-er with Marshall Allen/Ravi Padmanabha). Full on grindcore/metal scapes clashed with fiercely extended saxaphone use and a dynamic whirl of free-improvisational magic, all together a blinding force, a drugged memory, and a leave-no-survivors presense. Comes on transparent blue vinyl in a limited edition of 311 copies in a clear picture disc sleeve. | description | Beautiful noise, a folk music of out and far-reaching minds, explorations of depth, layers of tones, a torrent of sliced scales and echoes of washed-out melodies. This spectacular new release on Colour Sounds offers up two slabs of fukt-gorgeous sounds by LIEK-DF (Hektor Fontanez and Dave Ferraro) and DEAD GIRLS (Alfred Telehuahua & Moose "Hank" O'Brien), two NYC based teams pushing the realms of more-than-just-twistin’-knobs experimental sonics/noise. These boys ain't fakin' it, this is the real deal, this shit is to be filed under blow-off-your-dome fresh new-soundz! The LIEK-DF track explores nuances of acoustic guitar, clashing galaxies, swirling reversed tones, and rumblings from the magical towers in the Lower East Side, sheer beauty glazed over with yellow and orange cosmic goo, this is some heavy shit, just let it take you baby! DEAD GIRLS, on the other hand engage a more brutal place in the fields of time, phased out synths and haunting drum rumblings give way to epic destroying skull-fucked noise-core, completely engulfing all in their path, but with the deadly grace of a guillotine, protect yer neck! All of this sound is barely contained within the stunningly fresh packaging of greens, yellows, paints, sewed plastics, etc, this is fucking sick-wow-art baby, each piece is hand made/painted! First press of 39 and second press of 21 are both available, each is a unique packaging design! This is a split release with the t.b.t.d. label. |

Kriney's (ORISHA) sound world is a distorted confusion of tripped-slipped vocal illusions, slabs of synth thud, and feedback washed ecstacy. Lebron (TWI) could be found dancing in the worlds of twisted noise-scapes, delicate and intricate vocal/acoustic guitar intertwinings, and truly blissed blood-ridden and sweat-induced (i.e. HUMAN!) electronic explorations. Together these two compose and instantaneous world, far spreading, inner reaching, blown through the fucking roof man, thick-ness, molasses of time, AN EVENT! yup. |

| description | NYC psychedelic freak-jazzers propel off the globe, off the map, off the radar, and off the fucking clock with this one, get tight, it's coming! Formerly known as OWL SOUNDS, the new formation and vision of the group is clearly underway with this release, a hectic 27+ minute explosion of times and masses, brought to you by the usual suspects of drummer Adam kriney and upright bassist Gene janas, with new recruits, alto sax-ist Darius Jones (of BIRDS IN THE MEADOW/TANAKH and collab-er with Cooper-Moore/Chad Taylor/Andrew D'Angelo/etc) and acid-rockit electric guitarist Gene Moore (Ecstatic Peace recording artist, member of HAT CITY INTUITIVE (also on Ecstatic Peace)). The quartet effectively destroy the 4th dimension, with reeling psych-rock bombast, post ESP free-jazz orgasm, and bistering punk-noise-horror. Compositionally dense and erratically accelarated, this live performance from the Glasshouse Gallery in Brooklyn, NY is an expedition in redefinition of the basis/rules/attachments of music with respect to linearity and propulsion, worm-holes ain't got shit on these boys! A serious out-jazz vibe for deep sonic headz. Comes in ultra-warped classic tripper design packaging, a perfect visual for such insane sounds. |

| description | Totally cosmic voyages through the fanatsy-illusion-folk meets krautrock-prog/minimalism fueled eyes and ears of BLIZZARDS on this debut disc, sure to be a momumental release in the Colour Sounds catalog. Formed by drummer Adam Kriney and electric guitarists/noise-electronicians/vocalists/cousins Anthony Lebron (TWI THE HUMBLE FEATHER) and Hektor Fontanez (LIEK). They began in April of 2006 and combined their forces to create the most awesome of fantasy-magic music possible, feeding off the worlds of avant-pop, neo-experimental folk, classic prog/krautrock, noise/electronics/drone, and new-music-minimalists such as Glass, Riech, and Riley. Realising worlds filled with castles in the cosmos, dragons and unicorns, bubbling spheres, and reds and yellows filling the vast voids, visions of width and depth of time are folded and wow-ed! This debut release sees them engaged in compositions, structured improvs, and total spontanaeity to the effect of three pals who've been playing together forever, traveling the cosmos and interpreting all the mysteries OUT there. |

| description | Trashed-up punk-jazz art-rock by some NYC freaks who ain't fakin' it, and remember that even carefully scalped heads still reveal a mess of blood and gore; with this analogy we at Colour Sounds present the new offering of sacrificial pleasure, the debut release by QUIVERS entitled "once There Were Some". Formed out of the incestuous and diverse improv/experimental music scenes of NYC, the core of the group began as collaborations between electric guitarist Ninni Morgia, upright bassist Jordan Schranz, and vocalist Marie Evelyn. Somewhere down the line, these cats stumbled upon wrong-drummer Adam Kriney and figured they should play some shows together. After several successful revelatory performances to typically unappreciative/confused NYC audience members, these 4 bastards headed into the studio to lay it out and give birth to god's marmalade mystery baby, in sound form. A real ride through truly odd improvised rock/anti-jazz bullshit skronk, on the heavy speed meets LSD trip and on the mushrooms meets cocaine trip. No slop folks, these kidz got their skills and lay the shit down. This CD-R is limited to 52 numbered copies in stoned art-ed up packaging, typically eye-melting Colour Sound designs doin' it again. This is a split release with the Tigerasylum Records label. |

| description | Mind-blasting vinyl debut freak-jazz from the Brooklyn based OWL XOUNDS collective featuring the usual suspects of Adam Kriney on drums and Gene Janas on upright bass, this time teaming up with Austrian saxophonist Mario Rechtern who’s been active in free-jazz/improvisation since the 60’s, performing with the likes of Sunny Murray, Leena Conquest, and Linda Sharrock through the years, to name just a few. The boys really destroy all notions of time and space with this one, creating an omnipresent system of complex anti-rhythms and clustered/destructed melodies, so much is happening at once in so many velocities, it is a hurricane of delicate free-form jazz based sonics! This LP is limited to 400 copies on clear yellow vinyl and is a split release with Mad Monk (run by Wooden Wand’s James Toth) and Kriney’s Colour Sounds Recordings label. Fans of modern spazz-jazz groups such as Thurston Moore’s DREAM AKTION UNIT and John Olson’s (of WOLF EYES) GRAVEYARDS will find as much thrill in this baby as those of you stoked on the original freedoms found in early ESP-Disk, Savoy, and BYG/Actual recordings of the 60’s. |

| description | "One
of the many fine projects Adam Kriney is heavily involved with, La Otracina
with their debut on Holy Mountain show very well that Kriney and his associates
know how to make the kind of queasily dramatic psych/drone overload that
is manna from heaven to any number of shaggy-haired listeners (and a few
clean-cut ones as well). Not far removed from what early Ash Ra Tempel
did in terms of overlapping and deep-echoed feedback exploration and noise,
La Otracina add just enough direct anthemic power -- a bit of American
classic rock, if one likes -- to compositions like "Yellow Mellow
Magic" to make the combination of enveloping sound and hit-the-highway
drive work like a charm. "Nine Times the Color Red Explodes Like
Heated Blood" deserves mention just for the wonderful and perfectly
over the top title alone, but further credit for how a six-minute song
-- short for this album -- feels like a full symphony in miniature thanks
to any number of different tempo shifts and movements that would do an
arena prog band proud, and all while keeping the same feeling of atmospheric
drift and propulsion running throughout. Meantime, in more exploratory
songs, classic improvisational indulgence of the best kind crops up --
the central guitar melody that steps up in the introduction to "Beyond
the Dusty Hills (Cowboy in the Desert, Pt. 2)" perfectly anchors
the roiling drum fills. The concluding "Ode to Amalthea," meanwhile,
contains the slyest joke of the album -- two minutes into its engaging
sprawl, a guitarist picks out the theme used to communicate with the aliens
in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Combined with the title, presumably
referencing the small moon of Jupiter called by that name, this makes
for a knowing tribute to the kind of free-form exploratory space rock
of three decades back that happily carries through to a newer time."

Avocado Sunbeam Tapes' are the sounds of LA OTRACINA's catharsis, the
sum of all of our collective emotions, as portrayed through deep and heavy
psychedelic improvisations. These recordings were made on our summer tour
in 2007 recorded directly to cassette. The music we had written for this
tour was wildly complex and alive with motion, and usually at the end
of each set, we would perform an improvisation, a final statement of the
day, to literally get it all out, all of our joy, anger, frustrations,
and bliss. These recordings are the result of all of that, the sweaty
van all day, the drunken stoned nights, the hours of endless interstates,
and the fucking rock and roll baby...let's ride! Cover artwork by the
amazing Lucy Burrows |

| description | "The
Risk Of Gravitation" is the Summer 08 Tour mini-album by Brooklyn's
LA OTRACINA, who have long wandered and forged sounds in the hidden lands
of heavy psychedelia and progressive space music. This 7 track 32+ minute
excursion is a major paradigm shift for the group as drummer Adam Kriney
is now on vocal duties as well, adding yet another layer of epic intensity
to the swirling chaos of Evan Sobel's Fender Bass VI low-end destruction
and new guitarist Philippe Ortanez's ecstatically angular bliss-out. This
disc shifts between tracks of classic LA OTRACINA free-form freakout brilliance
and their current vocal-heavy jams, which put the progressive psych back
into early heavy metal while exploring/exploding realms of dark doom-sludge
thunder and the graceful complexity of early Canterbury jazz-rock. Refusing
to be quantified, it is clear that LA OTRACINA remain in an orbit of their
own, seeking out the cosmic weird and channeling it through cosmic hard
rock power!

| description | One of NYC's
most aggressive fire-jazz units, Owl Xounds, continues to link ESP'Disk
and the Misfits, but here also approaches beautiful noise on two 20+ minute
pieces. Mainstays Adam Kriney (drums) and Gene Janas (upright bass) are
augmented by Bonnie Kane on amplified flute and sax with electronics.
Kane's contributions bring the unit to its most psychedelic paramount,
her feedback-sax worshipping at the gates of guitar gods like Les Rallizes
Denudes and Blue Cheer, yet affectionately rooted in Ayler. Kriney (La
Otracina, Rust Ionics, Castanets) moves the action forward, ravaging without
destroying, and Janas (Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bern Nix's Sedition Ensemble)
practically rips the strings off his bass, yet both know when to let textures
form on their own. Packaged in mini-LP plastic sleeve with insert and
spray-painted stencil work by Lars Gotrich. |

| description | "For those spirited heads who like their free-jazz with a touch of the cosmic, and their feet dipped wet with infinity, Owl Xounds' exuberant outer-space jams are as awesomely pleasing as they are wildly unpredictable. On "Gypsy Monks On Holiday," the usual Owl Xounds Exploding Galaxy duo of Adam Kriney (drums) and Gene Janas (upright bass) are joined by Mario Rechtern (saxophones, electronics) and Gene Moore (electric guitar). This high-bias C-30 boasts three sprawling live improvisations from two separate performances. The bombastic and wild-eyed "Sambs Samosa And The Circular Saw" and the brief attack of "We Are But Three Small Faces" were both recorded live at SUNY Purchase , NY on 2/19/7, while the organic mutant jazz "Are Those Your Graham Crackers From The Wiccan Ceremony Last Week?" was cut live one day earlier at the Flywheel in Easthampton, MA on 2/18/7. Mario Rechtern's saxophone threatens a savage mutiny on "Gypsy Monks..," but Adam Kriney is so at the top of this game on this one he's shot straight through Maslow's pyramid of needs and wants and wound up blasting somewhere through a stratosphere of technical wizardry. Keep an eye on Owl Xounds, these space-jazz cadets are headed somewhere brilliant, sparkling, and totally uncharted." - Christian Llewellyn-Hardy at http://heavyvibes.blogspot.com/ |

Just like on the Dragonfrynd album there’s no drums on this double album. No guitars either this time. Just miles and miles of tripped out organ jams. Straight lines get transformed into a sprawling, blurry ocean of dubby overtones. Space age slowjams….this must be what shroomheads in love dance to. Sweet. 50 copies in slimline dvd cases with six page booklet and art by Peter Friel." - Cut Hands |

stoked to finally be dropping a bomb from la otracina, one of my absolute
faves from the past few years. these brooklynites know how to bring in it
in all forms from all directions. "gardens of blackness" is everything
you'd hope it was: heady dark drones that flirt with the world of metal
more than ever. drummer/vocalist adam kriney let's go on the a-side, hollering
and wailing like tomorrow's nothing but a distant dream.
other times you end up dredging up some serious murk from the bottom of the pool. hints of tape collage come out of nowhere and eventually it mellows out for a pretty even high. it's cohesive and all over the map all at the same time, definitely showcasing their new direction since their last record on holy mountain." here's kriney's breakdown of the tracks: The Land Above The Sky (Beyond
The Dusty Hills Pt 2.) Emerald Energy Mass Monolithic Mind there ya go, what else do you need? limited to 100 blackest black copies." - Brad Rose/Digitalis Limited |

| tracks | All tracks untitled |

| description | "Jazz
based improvisation has seeped into outsider rock for decades, but lately
that combination seems to be resurging in the American underground. One
leading light in this bubbling culture is New York label Tiger Asylum. Energetic
releases from The Eastern Seabord, Trauma Unit and Violence Jazz have bolstered
their growing catalogue, but the best Tiger Asylum outfit is Quivers. A
quartet featuring one current and two ex-members of Brooklyn psych rock
outfit La Otracina, Quivers can rip out a rock riff, but their rushing music
is firmly planted in the realm of ecstatic free jazz.
The centre of Quivers' wide-open mix is the versatile guitar work of Ninni Morgia. Over the five untitled tracks on 2012, Morgia's sounds range from miniaturist pin-pricks to sheets of dense fuzz. He opens the second track with warped feedback that sounds nearly electronic, then drifts into a Hendrix-style wail over the crashing rolls of drummer Adam Kriney and sawing tones of cellist Chris Welcome. One track later, Morgia's slippery noise meshes precisely with Kriney's cavernous rumbles. One might not expect such intricate interplay from an ensemble whose approach is more garage throw-down than studied introspection. Yet it's the small details in 2012 that make the strongest impression. This is clearest on the two long pieces that stretch across the album's second side. Simultaneously spacious and cacophonous, the tracks traverse a wide swathe of moods: buiding tension from carefully-bowed strings, chilly ambience from cymbal washes, frantic breathlessness from all the sonic elements peaking together organically. It's the kind of tonal range that's only achieved by familiar, thoughtful collaborators playing free of external restrictions." - Marc Masters, The Wire/Jan 2009 |

| description | An epic
adventure into dense instrumental prog, swirling psychedelia, and otherworldy
improvisational wizardry from Brooklyn, NY based freaks LA OTRACINA!
The LP consists of 5 tracks recorded in 2007 under the Adam Kriney/Evan Sobel/Ninni Morgia instrumental line-up of the band, and the music may be familiar to anyone who saw us during 2007. This LP is released on the fantastic Holy Mountain record label, which follows after our much praised "Tonal Ellipse Of The One" CD also released on that label in 2007. While "Tonal…" is almost sold out of its 1000 CDs pressed, this new LP will only be available for a 1 time pressing of 500 copies that each come with a fancy digital download card. Cover artwork of the HIGHEST magical order by the wonderful Maura Arraj! An all around aural and visual fantasy experience! "Don't be fooled by the King Diamond-style logo. This liberation of inverted progressive surf rock from psychedelic epithets plays like a fan-fiction account of Dick Dale's meeting with Sonny Sharrock at Amon Dueuel II's rehearsal space to discuss the "post-rock" epidemic. Unlike so many other instrumental soundtrack bands who employ ho-hum, choose-your-own-adventure tactics, La Otracina sticks to the rails of their own twisting corkscrews and spine-snapping dives. This work does not lend itself to the standard-fare apathy of background music. Blood Moon Riders is its own ride, with its own ticket, and the doors are locked after take-off. Pinch some headphones to your dome and situate the rest of your form into a beanbag as you navigate the fibrous landscape of a black-light poster. The tracks flow from a subtle new-age contingency to violent bouts with Laotian street gangs. Remember to pack a sack lunch and strap on a machete before mounting this electric buck-bot. Don't fret--the intention has always been to crack open your skull or drown you." - Holy Mountain |
